Honoring Resilience: National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and to recommit to building inclusive, equitable workplaces. For me, this month isn’t just symbolic — it’s personal.

As a 22-year severe traumatic brain injury survivor, I’ve experienced the challenges of reentering the workforce after trauma. I’ve felt the weight of assumptions, the sting of being underestimated, and the quiet courage it takes to advocate for accommodations that allow us to thrive. But I’ve also seen the power of possibility — when employers listen, when colleagues uplift, and when survivors are given space to lead.

This year’s NDEAM theme, “Access, Equity, and Opportunity: Then, Now, and Next”, invites us to reflect on progress while pushing forward. It’s a reminder that disability inclusion isn’t a favor — it’s a necessity. It strengthens teams, sparks innovation, and reflects the true diversity of human experience.

In my own journey, I’ve learned that employment isn’t just about a paycheck. It’s about dignity, purpose, and belonging. Survivors bring insight, adaptability, and heart to every role we take on — and when we’re supported, we don’t just contribute. We transform.

So this October, I invite you to:

• Learn about the history of disability employment rights — from the ADA to present-day advocacy.
• Celebrate the achievements of disabled professionals in your life.
• Challenge ableism in hiring, promotion, and workplace culture.
• Support organizations that empower disabled workers and entrepreneurs.

Let’s make this month more than a hashtag. Let’s make it a movement.

Keep fighting survivors!!
